n May 11, 2016, the Chilliwack RCMP Detachment hosted an Open House that welcomed the public to a chance to get a closer look at how Chilliwack’s policing service and its public safety partners serve the community.

There were a number of hands-on activities and informative displays on site, photo opportunities with police vehicles, and members in red serge and even Safety Bear.

Some of the interactive displays included the Integrated Police Dog Services, Integrated Forensic Identification Services, Emergency Response Team, The Alexa bus, local RCMP Jet Boat, First Nations Policing, Chilliwack Crime Prevention Services, mobile Command Center, City of Chilliwack Safer City Program, and ICBC.

The public was also invited to have a red serge tour of the Detachment which included a closer look of the cell block, General Duty area, Records Department and fingerprinting room.

“Safer City is proud to be here today to support one of our most valuable partners, the RCMP. By working together, we can improve road safety in the community,” said Samantha Piper who is the Safer City Coordinator.

ICBC Road Safety set up a display that allowed people to put on two sets of goggles which imitated impairment at both a 70 mg and 170 mg of alcohol level. The real test was trying to ‘walk the line’ in a heel-to-toe fashion without losing balance.

“The message is simple,” said Mike Weightman, ICBC Road Safety Coordinator. “Have a designated driver and plan ahead.”

Superintendent Deanne Burleigh, Officer in Charge of the Upper Fraser Valley Detachment and Inspector Davy Lee, Operations Officer, Chilliwack Detachment, were pleased to see such a great response from the public, support units and community partners.

“It was a great opportunity to welcome members of our community and share with them a small glimpse of how their Police Department operates,” said Superintendent Burleigh.
