Local cookbooks wanted for unique online project

Submitted by Dr. Lenore Newman, UFV Abbotsford

o you have old cookbooks from churches, schools and community groups filling a shelf, or cluttering the attic?

The University of the Fraser Valley is looking for community cookbooks from before 1975 from BC and the Prairie provinces.

The university is starting Western Canada's first library cookbook collection, and will be scanning the books to create an online database.

Led by Dr. Lenore Newman, the Canada Research Chair in Food Security and Environment at UFV, the project is designed to preserve this important element of our community's history.

Books from the Fraser Valley and the Lower Mainland are particularly wanted. These little books were once very common, but they are often simply thrown away by used book dealers or by relatives disposing of an estate; in a few more decades many of them will be gone if we don't preserve them now.

Donations of cookbooks can be sent to: Dr. Lenore Newman, 33844 King Road, Abbotsford, BC, Canada V2S 7M8
