Art Under the Umbrella June 11 at Central park
Jennifer Hickey, CCAC
n honour of local arts and culture, Art Under the Umbrella is poised to return to picturesque downtown Chilliwack’s Central Community Park on June 11, 2016. Themed around the Chilliwack Community Arts Council’s role as an inclusive umbrella organization, the Art Under the Umbrella festival encompasses a diverse range of artistic mediums.
Featuring an art market, live performances, artist demonstrations, and art installations, this all-ages event aims to bring local community members together with artistic individuals and arts groups in celebration of creativity in all its forms.
In preparation for the big event, the Chilliwack Community Arts Council invites visual artists to put their twist on installation art to be displayed in Chilliwack’s Central Community Park and surrounding space. To encourage public interaction, artists are challenged to create attention grabbing yet thought-provoking installations that serve to animate the surroundings.
Art pieces created off-site and assembled in the park during the event are encouraged. In addition, art installations specifically created with downtown landmarks or architectural features in mind may be considered, dependent on individual consultation with the artist. Interested artists are asked to complete an Art Installation Proposal Form to be submitted to the Chilliwack Community Arts Council by April 29, 2016. Forms are available online at chilliwackartscouncil.com or in-person at the Art Room (20-5725 Vedder Rd.).
Applications for artisan vendors are also being accepted until May 13, 2016. Local artisans are invited to have their original, handmade artwork and goods for sale as well as demonstrate their artistic process throughout the festive June 11 event. Application forms can be downloaded from chilliwackartscouncil.com. Printed forms are available at the Art Room.
Join the Chilliwack Community Arts Council on June 11 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to experience and celebrate art in its many forms. To find out more about Art Under the Umbrella or the application process please visit chilliwackartscouncil.com, call 604-769-2787 or visit the Art Room.
