Hundreds march in remembrance of fallen firefighter
Motorcycle cops lead the funeral procession for firefighter Brian Smyth down Chilliwack Central last Friday .
undreds of firefighters and emergency services personnel from districts all over BC marched down Chilliwack Central to the Alliance Church Friday in remembrance of Columbia Valley firefighter Brian Smyth, 57, who died of a heart attack March 7 while responding to a fire on Iverson Rd.
Smatterings of people, including groups of school kids, lined the rain-soaked funeral procession route. Workers from Unifeed doffed their helmets as the Lindal Beach fire engine passed by with the casket on top. Once at the church, the procession passed under a giant Canadian flag strung between a pair of ladder trucks.
According to his obituary, Smyth grew up in the Chilliwack area and joined the Columbia Valley Fire Department in 2008. He was active in the community and involved with such things as the local 4-H Club and the Cultus Lake Sailing Club.
Donations can be made in Smyth's name to the BC Professional Firefighters Burn Fund. www.burnfund.org
