Bill Baffles Board

No consultation just silent treatment from City and BC Gov't over proposed changes

Released by Cultus Park Board/Voice file photo chair Sacha Peter

he following statement is made with regards to Bill 27, The Cultus Lake Park Amendment Act, 2014 as it was introduced to the Legislative Assembly on March 27, 2014:

The Cultus Lake Park Board was not consulted by the provincial government about Bill 27.

It is the understanding of the Park Board that by virtue of the City of Chilliwack owning the lands consisting of Cultus Lake Park, the City was consulted and consented to this legislation.

“There are significant items unresolved by this legislation. Specifically, there has been no resolution to the complex land tenure issue that continues to pose a significant risk to stakeholders in Cultus Lake Park," said Cultus Lake Park Chairman Sacha Peter in a release Wednesday. "The Board previously made the provincial government aware of other problems that have been identified with the Cultus Lake Park Act and Bill 27 is silent on these matters.”

“On the positive side, a reduction from seven to five Commissioners will save approximately $16,000 per year which will make a modest contribution towards remaining a financially sustainable park,” he said.
