Secondary characters perform Oklahoma. Meet the cast June 17.
nown for its never-ending dessert decadence and musical theatre talent, Confectioner’s Cabaret is back June 17, this year with a new focus. Secondary Characters Musical Theatre is celebrating Canada and all its diversity with a Canada 150 program, featuring an array of local groups that all have connections to Secondary Characters.
This year’s exciting Cabaret line-up includes The Valley Babes (of Bookman video fame), The Maybelles, Jeff Bodner ‘Essence of Elvis,’ and Ever After Princesses.
This will be a diverse evening unlike any of our previous Cabarets. The line-up includes: The Valley Babes (of Bookman video fame), Elvis tribute artist from Jeff Bodner, 1960's girl group The Maybelles and Ever After Princesses. The program will be rounded out with Secondary Characters cast members singing musical theatre favourites, including a few home-grown Canadian shows such as Anne of Green Gables and The Drowsy Chaperone.
Secondary Characters has always been about bringing together people of different ages, experience levels, and specialties to work together in creating a summer musical.
Last year’s production of The Wizard of Oz saw everything from two pre-teen dance captains capably leading warm-up, to a retired reeds player of countless years’ experience, returning to the orchestra pit.
The Maybelles, 1960s girl group, features two SC performers who are heading to the Harrison Festival July 11 for a revival of The Last Five Years. Katrina Barson returns as Cathy and Amber Bergeron on bass for this production that played recently at Rickrack in the Wack.
Katrina and Amber also sing with the Valley Babes, a group that was featured in The Bookman parody videos. Valley Babes’ Emily Hamel-Brisson is a veteran of SC, having played the Witch in Into the Woods 2014, directed Oklahoma! in 2015, and switched gears to Production Manager in 2016.
A Canada 150 program wouldn’t be complete without a little Canadian representation; SC cast members perform songs from home grown musicals Anne of Green Gables and The Drowsy Chaperone, as well as a selection of other well-known favourites.
The event will feature a silent auction, with generous donations from many local organizations, as well as a Loonie Toonie auction geared towards kids.
Tickets are $20, or $5 for 12 & under, available at www.secondarycharacters.org cabaret or Long and McQuade
