Only the Lonely

New Horizons Program counters social isolation

By Robert Pearsall, PA to MP Mark Strahl

ark Stahl, MP for Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon highlighted, Minister of Seniors, Honourable Alice Wong's announcement that proposals for the New Horizons Seniors Program are being accepted from May 29, 2015 to July 10, 2105, to help counter social isolation in Canadian seniors.

"No Canadian should feel isolated, especially our seniors whose contributions are so valuable to our communities," said Strahl.

Social isolation involves low quantity and quality of contact with others, and can leave seniors vulnerable to depression and elder abuse. In 2006, over 30 percent of seniors were at risk of social isolation. The New Horizons for Seniors Program is an initiative that has helped seniors maintain a good quality of life, actively participate in their communities and remain healthy, through the funding of nearly 15,000 projects, representing an investment of $350 million.

Proposals can be placed for Pan-Canadian Projects, and for Community-Based Projects. The Pan-Canadian projects will help prevent and reduce social isolation among seniors using collaborative approaches, with an emphasis on measurable results. The Government of Canada is partnering with the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation and its Innoweave initiative to support the development and implementation of these projects, which will receive between $150,000 and $750,000 each in funding. Community-Based Projects will help empower seniors to share their knowledge, skills and experiences with others and support communities by increasing their capacity to address social issues. These projects are eligible to receive up to $25,000 in grant funding per year. For more information, visit:

Canadian seniors helped to build this country and they deserve our support. Our Government will continue to build upon the $2.8 billion in annual tax relief we have provided to seniors, through programs, such as, the New Horizons for Seniors Program.
