rough-and-ready crowd wasn't fazed in the least by the downpour on auction day. To them, the rain just added some flavour.

On Wednesday, May 25th, Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers in Chilliwack broke local sales records drawing approximately 3200 bidders in person, online and by proxy to bid on 1700 vehicles and heavy duty equipment from the forestry, agriculture and construction sectors.

From rock crushers and monster-sized excavators, to golf carts and minibikes, whatever it was buyers had a hankering for, they would have found somewhere in the sprawling yard on Industrial Way.

Company spokesperson Ian Malinski told the Voice in an e-mail Thursday that individuals and companies from all over the world took part in the multi-million dollar unreserved auction.

"Bidders came from 40 countries, including every Canadian province and territory and 38 U.S. states. Approximately 25 per cent of the equipment was sold to buyers outside of British Columbia, from as far away as Colombia, New Zealand, Turkey, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates," said Malinski adding that it was a new record for the company.

According to Malinski, much of the bidding action from from the web.

"Online bidders purchased 42 per cent of the equipment sold (by dollar value)," he said.

Staff inched vehicles down the runway past carded buyers in the gallery. Auction assistants stood next to digital readouts working the crowd hard with body language only a seasoned buyer could understand. An arm up, a finger pointed. The auctioneer watches them for signals. A fist in the air and smiles meant an item was sold. And so they moved through each and every item for sale.

Mountain Road Productions had a film crew on-site shooting season two of "Selling Big" which tells the story of "big machinery and big price tags" and airs on Cottage Life Network.

The next Chilliwack auction is scheduled for Wednesday, July 30th.
