Meeting of the Minds

Community wellness the focus of network breakfast

Sabine Mendez, CHC

hat a great event we had yesterday! Thanks to all of our speakers and our most excellent emcee, Nathan Ngieng, for providing the smooth transitions.

Both the Chilliwack Learning Society and Chilliwack Community Services demonstrated how their vast networks of partnerships make for incredibly rich program delivery, and contribute immensely to the health and wellness of our community.

They provide so many adult and family literacy supports, and have helped many Chilliwack residents connect, find new confidence in their abilities and move forward with their lives. We are fortunate to have these programs in our community.

I think many of us were completely surprised by the number of educational opportunities available at the Fraser Valley Distance Education School - Canadian Curriculum for travelling families? Upgrading and education at correctional facilities resulting in decreased returns to prison? Fun summer school?? Jeff's presentation was amazing, and I know I will be following up with him with my own questions.

Michelle Rickaby, from UFV's upgrading and university preparation department, shared information on UFV's upgrading, adult graduation and preparation for post-secondary programs. Michelle and Laura Watson from the Family Literacy Program at Chilliwack Community Services work very closely together, and they are more than happy to help you or your clients navigate the various upgrading opportunities in our community.

I wish you could all have been there! Nevertheless, I consider the Chilliwack Healthier Community network informed on the programs and services available to you and your clients through the Chilliwack Learning Society, Chilliwack Community Services and Fraser Valley Distance Education School.  Here are their websites for further information.

And just a quick note to mark your calendars for the March event: March 22.  The theme will be Primary Health Care, and I can reveal to you already that we will get to hear from former BC Minister of Health John Jansen, who will be speaking on some new developments at the Chilliwack Hospital and Health Care Foundation. Stay tuned for more information.
