Chilliwack’s Jasmine Harvey (R) partnered with Kyle Zirk,16, Jr. National Team member from Saskatoon in the C2 Women's last Saturday. Below, Finley Capstick, 13, was the K1 Cadet Men's winner.

here was no ice for this weekend’s IceBreaker! Sun shone down for the Chilliwack Center of Excellence’s first of three flat water, slalom kayak races.

Saturday’s event saw over 35 paddlers of all ages maneuver around the Salmon River slalom gates near Fort Langley.

As an added bonus, Canadian National Junior Team members Kylie Zirk and Pelly Vincent-Braun, assisted with the morning’s coaching clinics. These 2 athletes from Saskatoon and Whitehorse have been in Chilliwack training up at the Tamihi Rapids site.

Zirk and Vincent-Braun, along with local kayaker Jazmyne Denhollander, will be heading off to Brazil in April to compete in the Jr./U23 World Slalom Championships. What a treat that they took time out of their intense training routine to have some fun with the IceBreaker paddlers!

Lots of smiles, and only one rescue, made for a good day! And the only ice was in the drinks.

Two more CCE IceBreaker events this weekend. Saturday Feb 28, Corbould Gates, Chilliwack and Sunday March 1, Highway Gates, Abbotsford.
