Students Bank on Radio

CIVL can now concentrate on doing what they do best

Released by Aaron Levy, CIVL

t's finally that time for CIVL to shout from the rooftops. Students at UFV voted from January 15th to 18th, 2014, on whether or not to increase CIVL student levies by roughly 2.6 times per semester, and by a 15% majority, the results were a 'yes'.

Over the next year, work will begin to see CIVL broadcasting in Chilliwack, improve our technical resources as we move towards implementing operation in the new Student Union Building currently under construction on UFV's Abbotsford campus, and hiring new full and part time staff members.

Not all of this work will be done at once, but slowly yet surely, CIVL will be putting the new pieces together as student fees start coming in at the new rate during summer semester registration.

CIVL was encouraged by a similar referendum initiative from CFUR in Prince George at UNBC, as well as a very thorough survey document of NCRA member stations circulated last year by NCRA board and staff from Kingston's CRFC at Queens University, wherein the vast diversity in Campus Radio resources displayed CIVL's comparative underfunding.

An updated budget will be presented at CIVL's Annual General Meeting in March of this year, and planning is already under way in order to bolster the impact that Campus and Community radio can make in the Fraser Valley.

CIVL is pleased with the progress that has been made over the past ten years of planning and initiating campus and community radio in the Valley, and last month's positive vote is the high water mark in proof of that fact.

Thanks go to all of the partner organizations, non-profit groups, and other supporters throughout the Fraser Valley and the Lower Mainland, as well as the incredible work of the National Campus and Community Radio Association, whose network, staff, and board have provided the necessary infrastructure within which CIVL can accomplish all of its goals to date.
