Chilliwack MLA John Martin (C) speaks to constituents while wife Margaret (L) listens Saturday at Decades Coffee Club.

f you want to meet a politician, normally you make an appointment and go into their office. But if you happened to drop by Decades Coffee Club on Wellington Ave. Saturday morning, you would have found Chilliwack MLA John Martin in his new office. That is, his new office for an hour each month.

Martin wanted to reach out to constituents he represents in a more relaxed space, so he chose the popular coffee shop for some good old fashioned one-on-one interaction.

He says reaching out to the community is his "first and foremost task."

"It's a good opportunity to meet some people outside of the constituency office," he told the Voice. "Kind of a nice, friendly, sociable environment and anyone that has anything on their mind whenever we're doing Java With John can come on down and we'll pick up the coffee and we'll chat about whatever's on someone's mind."

He wasn't sure what to expect first time out but liked what he saw.

"We've got to be available to the constituents and we can do that in the constituency office and we can do that in e-mail but there's nothing like sitting downtown in a coffee shop and just having a chat with somebody," he said.

"It was a good call and I'm looking forward to doing this over the next four years."

The next Java With John is scheduled for 10-11am March 8th at Decades.
