Driver causes chaos while trying to evade police

A twisted wreck is all that was left of a Mercedes SUV, when a driver fleeing from police around 9:30 a.m. Thursday, ran a stop sign at Young Rd., and collided with two more vehicles, injuring one person. He then took off on foot and was tracked by police. Below, the suspect keels over ill in the back of the cruiser.


n December 4, 2014 at approximately 9:30 am, a member of Chilliwack RCMP Traffic Services noticed a suspicious newer model Mercedes travelling Northbound on Broadway in Chilliwack.


The police officer attempted to pull over the vehicle by activating his emergency equipment but the suspect vehicle quickly sped away. Concerned for the safety of the public, the police officer did not pursue the vehicle.


Police received information shortly thereafter that the suspect vehicle had collided with two vehicles on Young Road.


Witnesses indicated that the driver had allegedly failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Brooks Ave and Young Rd.


Witnesses also indicated that the male driver allegedly exited the vehicle following the collision and departed the area on foot.

Police cordoned off the area and proceeded to make patrols for the male who was located a short while later hiding in the backyard of a nearby residence. The male, who was curled up in a ball amongst blackberry bushes, surrendered to police without incident.

The suspect was taken to Chilliwack General Hospital for assessment for any injuries. Another driver sustained minor injuries.

Chilliwack RCMP continues to investigate, with the assistance of Lower Mainland Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service.
