t's that time of year already. The big Steelhead Derby is ready to go Friday, December 26.

Melvin Dureen, President of the Chilliwack Fish and Game Protective Association (CFGPA), told The Voice on the phone Tuesday the derby is set to go.

"Tickets are available at Chilliwack Dart and Tackle, Kent Outdoors, and Fred's Custom Tackle in Chilliwack and Abbotsford," said Dureen.

This derby is the CFGPA's biggest fundraiser of the year and so they are hoping for a good turnout.

In order to participate, tickets have to be validated.

They need to be punched at Punch Stations at Lickman Road, and Tamihi Bridge open from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. The Clubhouse will be open at 6:00 a.m. for coffee as well as punching tickets from 6:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

The Boxing Day Steelhead Derby is so old, that my grandpa, Ivor Hill, fished it in the 1940s, long before I was born.

For 71 years, the most rugged of the rugged fishermen, go out in the dead of winter, tying lines and sorting tackle with wet, ice cold fingers. You have to be hardy.

The weather on Friday should be bearable for fishers. Weather Network indicates a high of 5C on December 24 with a 60 per cent chance of rain.
