A truck lays on its side in the Highway 1 westbound on-ramp at Vedder Road Friday.

he BC Day long weekend long weekend got off to a rocky start for the driver of a Smithrite garbage truck that flipped onto its side around 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon, westbound on the Highway 1 on-ramp at Vedder Rd.

The accident happened midway in the on-ramp curve. The driver scrambled out uninjured after kicking out the truck windshield.

When emergency crews arrived, they found the truck was leaking enough fuel and oil across the road to call in the BC Ministry of the Environment to assess the damage.

It's unclear how the accident happened, but it may have been a combination of speed, a sharp curve and a load which may have suddenly shifted causing the truck to roll over.

The Voice had reports that the truck came from Superstore.
