Songs for Salmon

Legend Holly Arntzen to play in support of wild salmon

Eddie Gardener, WSDA

he Wild Salmon Defenders Alliance is hosting a Wild Salmon Justice Concert in

partnership with Stó:lő Research and Resource Management Centre this coming Saturday, April 30, 2016. Larry Commodore of Soowahlie will be the Master of Ceremonies for this  event!

The concert features live music by Holly Arntzen & Kevin Wright of the Artist Response Team. They will rock the Longhouse with songs like “40 Million Salmon Can’t Be Wrong, AYO, Salish Sea, Salmon Circle and Up Your Watershed!”

From Folk to Rock Your World, this music will make you dance to the spirit of wild salmon in celebration of our connectedness to the natural world.

The St’át’imc Bear Dancers, including Howard Shields, Donavan Adolh, Thomas Laffin Bear Terry, Robert Cloud and his son Raven, from Lillooet, will inspire us through song and dance, and they will pass on the teachings about the unique cultural and spiritual relationship Indigenous people have with the bears, the salmon and the sacred waters.  George Manuel Jr., Secwepmc from Neskonlith, will sing the”Wake Up” song that brought the crowds alive during the 2015 Wild Salmon Caravan!

Local restaurateur Louis De Jaeger and activist Eddie Gardner together stand firm against serving farmed salmon at Bravo Restaurant. In the photo below, Gardner and fellow activist Wayne Froese hold an information rally at a grocery outlet in Chilliwack.

There will be great door prizes and an amazing silent auction of beautiful artwork, including a bent wood box by Peter Gong, a carved paddle by Neil Baker, rattles, prints, gift certificates from Bravo Restaurant and Lounge and Ricki’s Restaurant, salmon art by Alexandra Morton, a drum set, and much more!

Wild Salmon Defenders Alliance T-Shirts will be on sale, as well as beautiful prints by Leanne Hodges of West Coast Wild!  We will have a concession by donation for coffee, tea, salmon biscuits, and bannock by the master Bannock Maker – Josephine Charlie!

Advance tickets are sold at Coqualeetza Gift Shop and Stó:lő Gift Shop in Chilliwack, as well as at Sue’s Copy Place and the Pantry Natural Foods in Mission.  Tickets will also be sold at the door and are affordable: $35/each, group ticket rates: 4 for $120 and 10 for $250.

Proceeds go towards the work of the Wild Salmon Defenders Alliance, the 2016 Wild Salmon Caravan that will pass though Cheam First Nation, Chilliwack and Matsqui First Nation June 9 & 10, and donations towards front line land defenders including Lax Kwa’laams First Nation, the Unistot’en Camp and the Voice for the Voiceless camp!
