No Offence, We Want a Fence

MLA Martin presents Alano Club enclosure funding

Desmond Devnich, Constituency Assistant to MLA John Martin

MLA John Martin presents Alano Club president an oversized cheque representing a $7300 funding grant from the provincial government.

arlier this month, Chilliwack MLA John Martin visited the Chilliwack Alano Club to deliver some unexpected news to club president Jim McConnell. The safety issues the club was encountering on their property on a daily basis would soon be alleviated by the construction of a new fence funded by the provincial government with a $7,300 grant secured by Martin.

“When the Chilliwack Alano Club came to me and shared their story of safety and security issues in the neighbourhood and the harmful effect these activities were having on their programs, I asked them to present a solution,” Martin explained. “With a little financial help from the provincial government, I am pleased that the Alano Club will be able to build a fence to protect their building and member activities inside.”

Construction of the new chain link fence with an attached gate for the driveway is expected to begin shortly.  The look will be very similar to the fence used for the community garden located across the parking lot from the club.  In addition, an existing three foot fence on part of the property will be taken down and disposed of.

The Alano Club of Chilliwack has been operating in Chilliwack for 35 years now, being of service and helping those in the recovery community by providing a safe, caring, and sober environment for people in recovery, or those contemplating recovery.  This is accomplished by providing fellowship with members who are successful in recovery, providing subsidized meals to those who are in financial straits, and supporting recovery programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous with an affordable place to hold meetings and workshops.
