Local MMA Man Licensed by BC Athletic Commission

Fight for certification over for Douglas, event set for May 2

Released by Francine Douglas/Voice file

Darwin Douglas holds up a MMA belt at weigh-ins last year.

arwin Douglas, Chilliwack’s Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) promoter and professional MMA fighter, was issued the first license to organize an MMA event in Chilliwack. The British Columbia Athletic Commission (BCAC) is a new provincial body that “oversees the conduct of professional boxing and mixed martial arts (MMA) as well as amateur mixed martial arts, kickboxing, muay thai and pankration events throughout the Province of BC”.

Douglas did not waste time scheduling the first MMA event in Chilliwack to be sanctioned by BCAC for Friday May 2nd, 2014 at the Tzeachten Community Hall, in Chilliwack, BC.

BCAC has a long list of rules that Douglas is familiar with, such as ensuring combative athletes who get into his ring are competing in a safe environment. BCAC requires event security and medical plans, and the use of BCAC trained and approved referees at the MMA event. All fighters must also meet their own list of requirements and be registered with BCAC.

The Four Directions Martial Arts Academy, owned by Douglas and his wife Francine is a 100% Aboriginal-owned and operated marital arts facility in Chilliwack, BC. They are excited to host their 11th MMA event they’ve named the Warpath Fighting Championships (WFC).

“The WFC is an opportunity for young athletes to gain ring experience. These events are the foundation that bring them to the next level of MMA. You will see some of these fighters in the UFC one day,” said Douglas in a release Tuesday.

WFC is a premiere fight promotion in BC that supports Mixed Martial Arts and Muay Thai athletes to advance their careers. WFC welcome athletes from all over BC and western Canada. WFC supports local MMA athletes, ensuring they compete in a safe and healthy environment and are able to participate in the fastest growing sport in the world.

The event on May 2nd has tickets available from $35 to $100. A special VIP section includes a buffet style dinner and a hostess for beverage service. After the exciting evening of MMA fights, we invite our VIP guests to stay for an exclusive post-fight social event. Everyone is invited to an unforgettable live fight experience of MMA. WFC and the Four Directions Martial Arts Academy only has Chilliwack to thank for the continued success of local MMA.
