Two buildings, two fires

wo suspicious fires happened outside of two buildings downtown within an hour of each other Monday.

Just after 7:30 p.m., a security guard on patrol spotted a sofa on fire at the back of the derelict Safeway building on Main St.

The guard had a backpack tank with him and managed to extinguish the blaze himself saving fire crews from having to drag out their hoses.

Then, at 8:15 p.m. the bug struck again directly across the street, this time setting a fire to a stack of crushed cardboard behind the old Liquidation World building on Princess.

This blaze was somewhat disconcerting because of the amount of combustible material that was situated next to the fenced-off gas meter.

It's not known if the City of Chilliwack fire department will recommend that combustibles like this be set well away from any gas fixtures.

If you have any information regarding these two fires contact the local RCMP office at (604) 792-4611 or to report anonymously call Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
