Bernard Elementary School's fab new playground

The new playground at Bernard Elementary was a hard-won project by school, parents and the community.

laying is never obsolete, but an old school playground can be.

It wasn't that long ago when a set of swings and monkey bars were considered a playground. Bernard Elementary School's new playground, from Habitat Systems Inc., looks like a cross between Ikea and Star Trek.

Janine McCurdy, Principal, Bernard Elementary told the Voice in an e-mail Friday that the "students are loving it."

For two years, the entire community got behind the school in the quest for funds to get rid of the old wood and bare metal playground. It was through car washes, pizza sales and even Chilliwack Ford helped out with a Drive-A-Ford event, that the school was able to raise an astounding $42,000.

In June the provincial government kicked-in $50,000 and that was all it took to get construction underway. The project was completed on schedule and in time for September classes.

"I just want to add my congratulations here to what this community of Bernard Elementary has done. That's really quite something," John Les, Chilliwack MLA, while presenting the cheque. "It's also a very worthwhile project. You have a very old playground here. It definitely needs to be replaced. It's an important part of the school amenity."
