The Lady's Last Bow
Empress Hotel pushed aside for new development
Staff
cloud of dust marked the final day of summer on Tuesday and also the end of
the Empress Hotel in downtown Chilliwack. People stood watching on the
corners of Princess Ave and Young Rd. with cameras in hand. Not much was
left of the 102-year-old structure after a backhoe tore into her and clawed
its way up the old building, eventually to sit triumphantly on top of what
was once the heartbeat of the city. The site is slated for an18-storey
tower. For those wanting a brick or two as a memento, ask first and don't go
past the barriers.
