First Church of Pentecost, held their Community Connect Day on Saturday with
a barbecue, prize draws, a puppet theatre, games and activities for the kids
and some good old fashioned Pentecost pride.
The Church's scripture-based tenet follows the bible closely and have ministries devoted to men, women, children and youth and as well they have home fellowship groups and bible studies.
Pastor Rev. Andrew T. Dillon told the Voice that they have the Community Connect events once a year, usually around the end of August.
"It's our opportunity to mix with the community and get them in touch with us," explained Dillon. "We carry it over tomorrow when we'll have a pancake breakfast in the morning and then service at 11am."
The church occasionally holds their Community Connect Day at Central Park but because of the possibility of rain.
"Last year we fed upwards of 350 people at Central Park," he said. "We feed a lot of the homeless people in our town from time to time at different events but this is our family-targeted time.
Despite competition from the other churches who also had family-oriented events in Chilliwack, Dillon said it was unavoidable because some of the members needed to run the event weren't available in August and it worked out better to hold the event in September.
"We're not really trying to compete here, there's enough people that need help and need something to do," he said.
Aside from community barbecues, First Church also works to help feed the poor, provide warm blankets, jackets and clothing to the homeless, food hampers to families in need in the community. They also help with garbage and graffiti clean-up, mow lawns, rake leaves, and shovel snow for our seniors.
If someone is looking for a new church or simply a place to worship while visiting Chilliwack, the First Church of Pentecost's doors are always open.
