he most cherished music of the Christmas season is what you will hear on December 14, 2013 at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre when the Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra and Chorus present “A Christmas You Can Handel."
A spectacular assortment of Yuletide musical treats are set to entertain the entire family throughout the evening. Just some of the sparkling programme’s highlights follow, and a few more are still being kept under wraps as special Christmas surprises.
Thanks to the Chilliwack Foundation, the CSO is most fortunate to own a concert harp. It will be played through the evening in both the lobby and on the stage, by resident harpist, Miya Otake.
Miya will then team up with Joanne Hankey, who on the Celtic Harp will perform together with Miya, the exquisite “Winter Harp” arrangements of I Wonder as I Wander, Huron Carol, and In the Bleak Midwinter. Also in the spotlight, Sarah Dyck will play the flute, bass flute and penny whistle.
Once again this season, patrons will be delighted by the gorgeous piano stylings of Debbie Fortnum. As she plays the carol Good Christian Men Rejoice, she will be joined by Scottish dancers from the Aberdeen Dance Studio.
Next in the evening’s lineup, the chorus will sing the well known Christmas favourites Away in a Manger, The Little Drummer Boy, Silent Night, and also a new selection entitled O My Babe, written by Lori Pappajohn of “Winter Harp.”
Subsequent to the intermission, the orchestra and chorus will present Part One of Handel’s glorious Messiah. The popular Part One of Messiah is sometimes known as the "Christmas" portion, because in concert it is traditionally performed during Advent. As celebrated soloists of the evening, Michelle Koebke, Soprano; Fabiana Katz, Mezzo Soprano; Jonathan Michel, Tenor; and Tony Funk, Bass are returning to sing in the Messiah.
The Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra and Chorus invite you to arrive by 7:30 p.m. to be inspired by the musical magic that will ring in the spirit of Christmas. Tickets: in person at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre, online at www.chilliwackculturalcentre.ca or phone 604-391-SHOW(7469).
