Sardis Home Scorched
Garage fire sends resident to hospital with possible smoke inhalation injuries
Chilliwack firefighters were on the scene within five minutes and stopped the fire from spreading to the remainder of the home.
t around 6 p.m. Friday, just as people were hunkering down for dinner, neighbours called the City of Chilliwack Fire Department after seeing smoke and flame coming from an attached garage at a 2-storey home in the 45800 block of Silver Ave.
James MacDonald, Assistant Fire Chief, Emergency Program said in a news release Saturday that firefighters were able to respond rapidly, arriving on the scene within 5 minutes.
"The fire was quickly brought under control minimizing damage to the garage with no damage to the home," said MacDonald. "The home owner was home at the time of the fire and was sent to hospital for observation."
A neighbour told the Voice that she had a key for the home and when she opened the front door, the 40-year-old male resident was in distress and lying on the floor.
When BC Ambulance paramedics placed the man on a stretcher he became agitated and started flailing his arms and legs, requiring firefighters to assist in restraining him.
There were no other injuries reported. The cause of the fire has not been determined and is under investigation.
