All Aboard For The Christmas Spirit

The Odds and Brothers Dube do Agassiz whistle-stop for the food bank Dec. 17 on board the Holiday Train

f you've never seen a luminescent euphonious centipede then you'll get a chance to catch one when the 12th Annual CPR Holiday Train arrives for a whistle-stop in Agassiz, Friday, Dec. 17 at 5:15pm.

The train is decorated with thousands of lights and will be chugging across BC and down the homestretch to Terminal City, after stopping at 140 towns and cities in North America collecting donations for the food bank. All the food and money raised at the whistle-stop's stays in the community.

One of the freight cars is setup as a stage and this year you'll be able to catch live performances by The Odds, an energetic alternative rock band and Quebec sensation Brothers Dube.

They've been bringing the music and people have been bringing the food. Since the train program started in 1999, they've gathered more than 4.8 million in cash and over 2.3 million pounds of food from US and Canadian destinations.

“The Holiday Train’s mandate remains strong and that is to help tackle hunger, regardless of borders or size of community,” said Fred Green, President and CEO of Canadian Pacific. “At this critical time of year, CP employees and thousands of volunteers in Canada and the United States are again joining together in helping those less fortunate.”

The numbers behind the Christmas glee are grim. This week, Food Banks Canada released figures from their country-wide Hunger Count Survey and found that in 2010, use had gone up across the board a whopping 9.2 per cent over last year.

This promises to be a cool family evening but don't forget what it's all about and maybe bring a non-perishable to the station.

The 2010 CP Holiday Train schedule is available on cpr.ca for the latest updates and information on the train's schedule.
