Canyon MP, Mark Strahl and the Government of Canada want to help
raise awareness of the problem of elder abuse by recognising June 15
as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
"Elder abuse is all too common a problem in communities across
Canada. This Friday is an opportunity to bring attention to the
abuse and neglect that some older adults experience," said Strahl.
It is believed that between four and ten percent of Canadian seniors
experience some kind of abuse. One in five Canadians believes they
know of a senior who might be experiencing some form of abuse. It
can take many forms including financial, physical and psychological
abuse and neglect.
"In whatever form it takes, abuse is never acceptable and should
never be tolerated," said Strahl.
In addition to awareness campaigns and new legislation to protect
seniors, the Government of Canada, through the New Horizons for
Seniors Program, provides funding to organizations across Canada for
projects that address elder abuse.
