Double Trouble

Two structure fires keep crews hopping

t approximately 1300 hours on Wednesday, July 10, 2013, the Chilliwack Fire Department responded to two structure fires within the hour.

1256 hours: Firefighters arrived on scene in the 6500 block of Fern Street to the report of a house fire.

Upon investigation by crews a 10x10ft shed was discovered in the backyard fully involved.   The fire impinged on the owner’s fence, a neighbour’s pool and a pickup truck before being extinguished.  The shed and its contents were fully consumed. The cause of the fire is undetermined but is considered to be accidental.

1322 hours: Firefighters were dispatched to the report of a structure fire in the 8000 block of Young Road. 

Fire crews located a fire in an upstairs bedroom closet and extinguished it. The fire resulted in the second floor being heavily damaged by smoke. The two occupants at home at the time of the fire escaped the home, with one resident being examined by BCAS crews for smoke inhalation. Working smoke alarms also assisted in warning the occupants of the fire.

The cause of the fire is considered accidental with a possibility of smoking materials being involved. Emergency Social Services were called and provided temporary accommodation for the family.
