Fire Dept News

Basement Burns

Residents displaced, neighbours assist

Released by J. MacDonald, Asst FC, City of Chilliwack FD/Voice photos

t approximately 10:15 pm on Saturday January the 5th, the Chilliwack Fire Department was dispatched to a single family home in the 9300 block of Woodbine Street.

When the fire crews arrived on scene they observed smoke from a basement window at the back of the house. Occupants of the house had evacuated and they told the fire crews that there was no one left in the house. First arriving fire crews quickly brought the fire under control and within five minutes of entering the building they were able to put the fire out. There were no fire fighter or civilian injuries.

While the fire was contained to the basement there is significant heat and smoke damage to the room of origin as well as light to moderate smoke damage throughout the rest of the house.

Three of the five adult residents are in the care of Emergency Social Services (ESS) while the remaining residents have been supported by friends and family. One neighbor graciously offered the displaced residentís refuge in their home until ESS arrangements could be made.

Investigation by fire department personnel has established that the cause of the fire was accidental.
