When we think of homeless and sick or injured animals, we most often equate the SPCA in Chilliwack as the only one who responds to an animal in crisis. But there is another organization in town who does more on less.

A lot of the time, volunteer work at the Chilliwack Animal Safe Haven (CASHS) shelter goes unsung. The Society doesn't garner much of the spotlight so it does effect their funding and more often than not, they subsist on limited private donations and support from the community.

At present, the facility is working at capacity with well over 120 cats. They don't put-down cats unless medically advised and work to find them good homes in the community instead.

Prior to being adopted, their cats are screened for health issues including standard vaccinations, worming and spaying or neutering and each is tattooed for identification.

There is a volunteer foster home program available where people take in to nurture the young and sick animals until they are old enough or well enough to be adopted.

Barn Sales from April to October help with their funding needs. In 2009, staff raised over $8000 from items bought in their converted yellow barn at the back of the property.

To help the Safe Haven you can;

  • Adopt a cat

  • Sponsor a cat

  • Volunteer

  • Donate money, food and supplies

  • Buy something on Barn Sale day

  • Tell your friends about Animal Safe Haven

Services include foster care, health care, spay/neuter surgery and adoption counseling.

  • be at least 18 years of age

  • have valid identification with your current address

  • be able to verify that you can have a pet where you live

  • be able and willing to spend the time and money necessary to provide training, medical treatment and proper care for your pet

  • understand that the Chilliwack Animal Safe Haven Society Inc. reserves the right to deny any adoption for any reason

  • pay $115 adoption fee for cats
