Released by Ed Stenson, Harrison
Festival Society
ome
spend the Valentine’s Day weekend in beautiful Harrison Hot Springs
enjoying some wonderful music. The Harrison Festival Society
presents a double bill featuring an eclectic mix of great music;
Roots/rock singer-songwriter Babe Gurr brings her blend of
roots/blues/pop and Locarno brings a groove heavy mix of
Mexican folk, Cuban Son and Latin soulon Saturday, February 11 at
the Memorial Hall, Harrison Hot Springs, BC.
Locarno
Locarno is the Latin project of Juno award winning musician and
Paperboys frontman, Tom Landa. The music, like him, is part Mexican
but with strong doses of Cuban Son, Folk Music, Pop and Funk. There
are threads of Son Jarocho and Salsa but the songs are more edgy and
contemporary than that. The music could be compared to Manu Chao,
Ozomatli or Rodrigo and Gabriela but although there are similarities
it is truly original and a new flavour in the Latin music genre.
For the past few years Tom
has been writing and recording the material for his project Locarno.
His goal is to create music which is heavily influenced by Mexican
music but using the elements and musicians around him in his
hometown of Vancouver. A key element to this sound is the
partnerships he has created with producer Joby Baker who has worked
with several World/Latin artists including Alex Cuba and Miguelito
Valdes who lends his trumpet and percussion talents to the project.
Miguelito was born and raised in Havana Cuba and has played with
Afro Cuban All Stars, Omara Portoundo and The Buena Vista Social
Club. Rounding up the group is Sam Esecson on drums and percussion,
Kalissa Hernandez on Violin and vocals and Nick La Riviere on
trombone.
Babe Gurr (pictured)
Babe Gurr is a singer-songwriter who has been turning heads for
years with her blend of roots/blues/pop. Babe’s songwriting has
recently received accolades, taking the win for the Sonic Bids
Nashville Song Contest and garnering honourable mention for three
self-penned tunes in the acclaimed Billboard World Song Contest.
Babe’s much anticipated album titled “SideDish” takes this unique
artist in a new direction, exploring world music fused with her own
unique roots style and writing – Ethno-Roots. Italian, Spanish,
Middle-Eastern, Brazilian and New Orleans influences are the
backdrop of the musical landscape of Babe’s 8 self-penned tunes as
well as 2 cover songs sung in Italian, that she has made truly her
own….this CD promises to transport the audience and listener to
another place and time!
Playing some of the most popular and prestigious concert halls in
Canada spanning from Vancouver Island to the Maritimes and U.S.
dates in New York and Seattle, Babe Gurr’s name is becoming familiar
to many more fans each day, people who appreciate finely crafted
songs performed with sincerity.
"Gurr sings with a husky sensuality, delivering her lyrics with
both urgency and warmth...." - Marke Andrews, Vancouver Sun
