packed room of over 100 people from Chilliwack, Agassiz, Hope, and Sts'ailes attended the Diamond Jubilee Awards ceremony last Thursday.

Three Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medals were awarded at the Coast Hotel in Chilliwack to Chief Willie Charlie of the Sts'ailes First Nation, Ted Westlin of Agassiz, and Anne Schudeleit of Boston Bar.

The first annual Chilliwack-Hope Citizenship Award was given to Dr. Ernie Murakami of Hope, while the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal awarded to the highly esteemed Dorothy Kostrzewa was given posthumously.

Dorothy's grand-daughter, Stephanie Kostrzewa, received the medal on behalf of the family.

The distinguished recipients of the awards were chosen by a selection committee assembled and chaired by Gwen O'Mahony, MLA for Chilliwack-Hope.

"I brought together members from all of the different communities that make up Chilliwack-Hope to find some of the most accomplished and deserving people in our communities. The selection committee did an absolutely wonderful job," said O'Mahony.

Mayor John van Laerhoven of the District of Kent, Eddie Gardner, Elder in Residence at the University of the Fraser Valley, Louise Piper, Chair of the Chilliwack Board of Education, Lloyd Foreman, Fraser Valley Regional District Director for Area 'A', and Mayor Susan Johnston of Hope met in October of last year and deliberated in person to determine who should receive the honours. Each committee member brought three names forward for consideration, before the committee as a whole narrowed the recipients to four for the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medals and one for the Chilliwack-Hope Citizenship Award.

"Each and every recipient of our awards last night have demonstrated a commitment to each of their communities," said O'Mahony. "I am consistently inspired by the caliber of people we have here in Chilliwack-Hope."
