MLA John Les has asked the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly
to investigate series of negative and partisan ads that appear
to have been paid for using the constituency office allowance
from Fraser-Nicola MLA Harry Lali.
"These ads are
clearly partisan, direct readers to the BC NDP's political party
website, and personally attack a fellow MLA," said Les. "If it
turns out these ads originated from and were paid for by Mr.
Lali's taxpayer-funded constituency allowance, it would a
violation of the standards of conduct for MLAs. This is why I've
asked the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly to investigate and
I look forward to his ruling."
The ads, which are not identified as being paid for by a
political party, all contain MLA Lali's constituency office
address and contact information but also include the BC NDP's
political website address along with partisan editorializing on
BC Place, forestry export policies, and the all-party Special
Committee to Appoint an Auditor General.
Ads paid for using taxpayer-funded constituency allowances are
meant to be informational in nature and cannot be used to
promote political parties or advocate partisan positions.
Last week, Les sent a letter to the Speaker asking him to
investigate a negative, partisan news release issued by Mr.
Lali's constituency office that attacked one of his political
opponents. Mr. Lali subsequently stated
here in "(the) press release of Jan. 28, 2013, was
inadvertently sent out of my MLA constituency office, it was an
honest mistake." Lali also said he takes, "full responsibility
and will ensure it does not happen again."
"This is not a one-time, isolated incident by Mr. Lali. This is
a co-ordinated series of negative attacks that I believe it is a
blatant misuse of taxpayer money," added Les. "Adrian Dix says
he disapproves of negative, partisan advertising. The repeated
actions of Mr. Lali are further proof that Mr. Dix is all talk
and no action when it comes to negative and personal attacks."
