Army Run is proud to announce next year’s new event, the Ortona
Challenge, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Ortona,
which took place from December 20 to December 28, 1943 during the Second
World War. Participants entering this event will take part in the 5K
race, followed by the 10K.
The Ortona Challenge is an opportunity for
participants to remember and to honour fellow Canadians who lost their
lives during this battle.

Canada Army Run will welcome tens of thousands of participants from
across the country to run, walk and roll in this truly unique
military-themed community event held in the National Capital Region.
• The Battle of Ortona took place from December 20 to December 28, 1943
during the Second World War between regiments of the Canadian Army and
German paratroopers, in the town of Ortona on the eastern coast of
• The battle in the heart of Ortona is remembered by our veterans for
the intense close- quarter house-to-house and street-to-street fighting,
at a cost of more than 1,200 Canadian troops killed and the suffering of
Italian citizens during their liberation.
• Canada Army Run, presented by BMO Bank of Montreal, is one of the most
inspiring events in the country, where civilians, Canadian Armed Forces
personnel and runners of all ages and abilities run, walk and roll
together to show their pride as Canadians and as runners.
• Since 2008, Canada Army Run has raised more than $2.6 million in
support of Soldier On and Support Our Troops Fund – two Canadian Armed
Forces financial support programs that provide assistance to ill and
injured soldiers and military families in need.
• The popular Commander’s Challenge, in which participants complete in
both the 5K and half marathon events, was inaugurated in 2016 and is
back in 2018 for a third year in a row.
• Canada Army Run race weekend offers something for everyone, including
a unique opportunity to interact with your Canadian Army.
