Kathleen Stephany seeks NDP nod for Chilliwack-Hope riding

oters will have a brand new choice in the upcoming by-election TBA, after Wednesday's announcement by Kathleen Stephany that she'll be seeking nomination as the NDP candidate for the Chilliwack-Hope riding to replace outgoing Liberal MLA Barry Penner.

 

Even with her impressive background in nursing, teaching, writing and administration wrapped up in a curriculum vitae that reads like an encyclopedia of medicine, it's unclear if Stephany is the missing link and possible secret weapon in the NDP's arsenal against the Clark Government, simply because she's untested in the political arena.

 

Having said that, and for all intents and purposes, she does appear to have the appropriate armor to engage in battle, but it remains to be seen if she has the mettle for the job. She could be that illusive power-person the NDP has been struggling to find in the Upper Fraser Valley, who has the ability to push the button to launch their version of the War Measures Act on the BC Liberal Party.

 

FV NDP Party President Al Ens confirmed her announcement on Thursday.

 

She has close ties with Fraser Health Authority through her work in a variety of positions at Langley Memorial Hospital since 1977.

 

Along with a Master's Degree, Stephany brings a an inside working knowledge of youth and family issues to the table after her years toiling in the trenches as a substance abuse councellor and as a psyche nurse at Langley Memorial hospital.

 

Currently, she's full-time faculty in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program (BSN) at the Douglas College Coquitlam campus.

 

Stephany also worked was Burnaby's Chief Coroner and Manager of Special Investigations for three-years until 2003.

  • Doctor of Philosophy in Counselling Psychology, Master Degree in Counselling  

  • Psychology, Bachelor Degree in Psychology, Bachelor Degree of Science in Nursing and  Diploma in Nursing.

  • Practicing Registered Nurse (RN) in BC, Psychologist and Certified Canadian Counsellor and Psychotherapist (CCCP) with the Canadian Counselling & Psychotherapy Association. 

  • Associate Member of the Western Region of Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing.

  • A member in good standing of the Member of the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP).

  • A newly inducted member of the Xi Eta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.

  • Former Coroner and Manager of Special Investigations for the BC Coroner’s Service   (BCCS).  In this role demonstrated nursing leadership (provincially) in numerous ethical endeavors that involved policy changes in the areas of preserving social justice and in the delivery of safe, competent health care.

  • Currently employed as a full-time Professor, teaching courses in Nursing Ethics, Mental Health, Addictions and Therapeutic Communication.

  • Theorist in the Subject Category: The Ethic of Care & Communications

  • Published Author (Refer to Publication List on Page 8)

  • Completed the writing of an e-textbook under contract from Science Bentham Publishing.  The book is entitled: The Ethic of Care: A Moral Compass for Canadian Nursing Practice.  Slated for release January, 2012.
