Wednesday December 28, 2011 Fire Dept News Maple Avenue Mattress Fire Sleeping woman barely escapes Released by Kathy Laynes for Jeff Ullyot, City of Chilliwack Fire Department
Three occupants were in the home when the fire broke out including a 46 year old female who was asleep in the fire bedroom. She attempted to fight the fire but was not successful and managed to escape unharmed. Two other younger occupants, sleeping in the basement, also escaped, with minor burns to their feet caused when they walked through some burning debris while trying to suppress the fire with an extinguisher. They were forced out of the home by the heavy smoke and treated on scene by BC Ambulance attendants.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the City of Chilliwack Fire Department and is not considered to be suspicious. There were no firefighter injuries.
