Show Me How You Burlesque

Give the gift of dance this Christmas

 

n the 1920s, Joesephine Baker and Mae West danced burlesque. In 2010, Christina Aguilera sings about it in "Show Me How You Burlesque" with Cher in their latest movie called "Burlesque".

On January 21, International Burlesque Star Burgundy Brixx who will be at Cheeky Cherri to give a dance class. Or, if you're not the dancing type you may know someone who is and in that case, this would definitely be a unique gift under the tree this year.

"Dip your toes into the world of burlesque with a class that teaches you some of the tips and tricks of classic burlesque striptease. Burgundy will teach guests a fun classic burlesque striptease routine and some of the sassy history behind the bump ní grind," said Cheeki Cherry owner Brigida Crosbie in a release.                                                Dance Star Burgundy Brixx

This is a one-night-only affair and a rare chance to learn the secrets of burlesque dance from one of the best in the world. Class instruction lasts about an hour and is available to ladies 18-years-old and up. The cost is $25 for the class or gift certificate.

Crosbie says the class is closed and confidential, and girls should wear clothing they can move in that shows their body line. Bring along an extra bra and panty or elastic waist skirt that will fit over your outfit. High heels are also preferred.

The second part of the instruction will be an optional burlesque tassel twirling lesson lasting about a half hour.

"Guests who have their own pasties, or purchase them at the event will be taught proper adhesive methods to adhere pasties to body, and the skills to spin those tassels like a pro," said Crosbie.

Also, ladies can put a special photo under the tree for their guy this year with a burlesque portrait by Shimona Henry of Pin-up Perfection Photography using burlesque inspired props including boas, fans and gloves. Packages start at $15.

Burgundy also has the distinction of being the first burlesque performer ever to be featured in Vancouver's long-running dance concert series,

"Dances for a Small Stage and will be seen in the upcoming Brief Encounters at Performance Works on Vancouver's Granville Island. She was honoured by the Vancouver Burlesque Festival in 2009 with an award for "Outstanding Contribution to the Vancouver Burlesque Community.

After training with her mentor, Jo "Boobs" Weldon, in the art of burlesque striptease, and creating her own unique and innovative performance pieces, Burgundy found herself performing burlesque in New York City several nights a week. Her unique style made her a favorite and regular at The Slipper Room, Ixion Burlesque and Kitty Nights as well as Starshine Burlesque, Le Scandal Cabaret, Coney Island's Burlesque At The Beach, and Galapagos Art Space.

Before turning her skills and focus to the world of Burlesque, Burgundy worked as a singer and dancer for The Radio City Rockettes, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Trump Casinos, and many regional and off-Broadway theatres in New York City. She also worked as a dance instructor for numerous studios in both Boston and New York.
