Schratter rode 40,000 km and spent 469 days living out of a bicycle for mental health awareness
Staff/Voice photos

Michael Schratter left Vancouver on his bicycle and headed down the west
coast in August 2010, he turned into a machine, powering through some 33
countries for the next year-and-a-half.
For 16-months and over 38,000 km, his piston-like legs hammered relentlessly at the bike's crank through every kind of terrain and extreme weather imaginable.
There was the odd troubled country or conflict war zone to avoid, and by skipping over the occasional geographical hurdle on a plane or train, Schratter was able to circumnavigate the globe pretty much as the crow flies.
Statistics
say that one-in-five Canadians suffer from mental health issues, and
Schratter wanted to raise awareness about the stigma surrounding conditions
like depression, anxiety disorders and schizophrenia. He also raised the
kingly sum of $67,625.91 over the trip for the Mental Health Association.
